Red Cabbage

The subject for this painting actually came from my garden. I'm a gardening noob; 2008 was my inaugural vegetable growing year. There were successes and there were failures. One of the successes was the crop of cabbages. Aside from a few cabbage worm holes, they were quite fit. The first red cabbage I cut last year I knew I wanted to try and paint it. I took a few shots and, over the course of a few months, created the above painting. Frankly, It's not what I imagined when I started. I very nearly painted over the canvas a few times I was so displeased. But I'm glad I didn't. If nothing else, I'm glad I was able to commemorate my first year of gardening.

Oil on canvas

oh my goodness i'm so glad you didn't paint over it! it's a total rush to see it. i think it's fantastico. makes me wish i was a violet vegetable. the colours you chose for the backdrop really seem to surprise me in the best possible way

i remember you showed us the inside of one of those cabbages this summer. it's totally exciting to know now that you were thinking about painting it. kool! maybe we can build you a gallery for your stuff one day. :)

that gives me a great idea... maybe in a yr or two, after i've completed a series of garden-related paintings, i'll have a show in my shed. instead of wine and cheese it'll be a case of india and a "u-pick" sign stuck in the carrot patch.

* FREE 5 lbs potatoes with every painting purchase *

hehehe
