Harley

This little painting of Harley, a much loved and much missed Goldendoodle, was a Christmas present to his family. (12"x12", oil on plywood)

Life drawing

Trying to switch my brain out of production mode... I think the lever might be stuck. Rifling through some drawings made at Group of '77 life drawing two years ago... need to get back to those sessions.

Pink Eye and Printers' Fair

Big thanks to everyone who came by the Craft Council Craft Fair this past week! I'm looking forward to being at these two great events this coming weekend: Pink Eye Autumn Art Sale on Saturday and the annual Printers' Fair on Sunday. Both are happening at The Rocket (upstairs in the studio space), Water Street, St. John's. I'll have my t-shirts and linocuts at both these events.

Tuxedo final

I finished printing the second colour on the "Tuxedo" linocut earlier today and promptly continued cutting the plate for the third and final colour. Here's a proof. I'm happy with it. So the next 24 hours will be a frenzy of printing so I can do packaging on Tuesday and have them ready for the Craft Fair on Wednesday evening (Jack Byrne Arena, Torbay, Nov. 11-15). I haven't done a final tally yet but I'm expecting to have around 50 prints in the run.

Tuxedo linocut, 2nd colour

This is a frantic week of making and packaging. On the making side of things, I'm working on this linocut "Tuxedo." I pulled this quick proof of the 2nd colour tonight. Hoping to have this available next week at the Craft Council Craft Fair at the Jack Byrne arena in Torbay, NL (Nov. 11-15).

Copper tree in progress

Working on some copper trees this week. Trees have been my go-to doodle since childhood so making these is a lot of fun. This pic is is a detail of the larger piece.

Faux swag

Hot off the press... some faux swag for a long defunct Newfoundland enterprise, the Superior Rubber Company.

Clean screens

Several hours today were spent on the glamorous job of rejuvenating old screens. Stripped of emulsion, dehazed, degreased with a power wash between each. New emulsion going on tonight and they'll be ready for new designs tomorrow. Time to order more t-shirts!

Big City Reflections #1

Sometimes you've got to stop everything and do something off the wall. This is one of those somethings. I'm calling it "Big City Reflections #1". It's copper and aluminum on masonite, 11"x14". No antiquing on this one... polished and buffed au naturel.

Weekend events

Two of my copper pieces (shown above) have been selected for the Craft Council of NL Annual Members' Exhibit which opens at 2pm this Saturday, June 27 (2nd floor of Devon House). On the same day, I'll be a vendor at Some Good Market, Canonwood Hall (St. Thomas' parish hall) on Military Road... just a few minutes walk from Devon House so you could take in both events! These copper pieces, Duelling Squid and Fox Skull, are 11" x 14", framed and limited edition (I'm only making 6 of each design... each one is numbered accordingly). I might have another Duelling Squid with me at the market (working on it today) but you'll find both at the exhibit. Please drop by and check them out! At the market I will also have my usual wares: linocut prints, silk-screened t-shirts, painting reproductions and smaller copper-tooled pieces.

Tuckamore etching

Etching class was a great experience. Shown are the three prints I pulled as well as the copper plate. Signed up for a membership at St. Michael's Printshop so I might be trying out some other methods later in the year.

Thursday, June 18, 2015

I'm taking an etching class on the weekend so I'm doing some drawing this week to get ready for it. I'd forgotten how much I like gnarled trees.... must do more. This poor tuckamore is barely hangin' on.

Fox skull underpainting

An underpainting of a fox skull on the easel today. Based on a photo by Laurie LeGrow. This scoundrel raided Laurie's chicken coop last year.

Mechacod Linocut

Mechacod: the linocut. Since doing the t-shirts, I had a few requests for prints. I'm not currently set up for screen-printing on paper so I made a new linocut plate. Edition of 60.

Big weekend!

I couldn't resist taking part in both of these events this weekend even though they conflict. Manufactured Right here is at the Remax Centre Saturday and Sunday. My friend Katherine will be at my table on Saturday so that I can also be at Sin City Crafters at the Rocket. Busy now trying to double up my inventory AND trying to have a new 2-colour linocut ready for the weekend.

Buy local

My cartoon for this month's Northeast Avalon Times. Two "big" concerts going head-to-head this summer on the same day: one in St. John's and one in Grand Falls creating a little townies vs. baymen action. Enjoy the show if yer goin' but don't forget to buy local when you can!

Whistler's Puffin

Whistler's Puffin (with apologies to Whistler and his mother). The original painting was actually called "Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1". My version has a bit more colour. And a lot more puffin. Still tweaking it a bit but it's pretty well done. (20" x 20", oil on canvas)

Squid!

New addition to the small copper-tooled series I started last year (killick, cod, etc).

Onesie the rooster

This is Onesie the rooster. His owner Laurie (founder/manager of Some Good Market), took a great shot of him the other day and I felt compelled to paint him. Onesie and I have never met but I'm told he's quite the charmer.

Oil on canvas, 20" x 20"
