Rolling Waves, poured acrylic triptych

Finished off "Rolling Waves" this week with a nice satin varnish. Pleased with the outcome and very happy that I have a substantial piece for the big empty wall in our TV room (see top pic). Posting this in my Etsy shop shortly if you’re interested in making it your own.

New year abstract

Kicking the year off with this weird little abstract... puddles of poured acrylic paint and glaze. Usually I add water to the paint before I pour but this one was a pure paint and glaze combo leaving a thick footprint on the canvas. These poured abstracts feel like a guilty pleasure but I intend to do more of them this year.

Merry Christmas!

After a lengthy day of stuffing my gullet with turkey and Christmas spirits with family and friends, my mind is wandering to the next painting(s). I thought I’d post this recent commission... a request for a Mickey Mantle painting. I had a lot of fun making it and was happy with the outcome (as was the recipient, I’m told). "Blossom" poured painting

This is last night’s result of my third day of working with poured paint. I settled on “Blossom” as the title but there were so many options: every turn of the canvas seemed to reveal new shapes and patterns. I am happy with the contrast and vibrance of this one. This is also a bigger canvas than previous... I think the larger size made me feel a little more in control of the outcome.

Pretty sure I’m getting addicted to this process.

Seascape 2

This image has been in the forefront of my mind for a week or more so the paintings had to be made so I could move on with other things. It was a bit like getting a song stuck in your head.

Not complaining... I enjoyed making them. Working with texture is always fun. Really enjoyed the modelling paste. See the detail shot below to get a sense of the painting’s texture.

Paintings have left the building

Thank you to Vanessa and her sister Angie for their recent painting purchases! My walls are a bit more bare but my studio supplies are about to get a great boost. Celebrating with delivered pizza followed by paint and canvas shopping. And, given the holiday tomorrow, probably some late-night painting punctuated by beer.

Trying to bring some older unfinished paintings to a close. Weird moment: jumping form this to a painting of a Ducati motorcycle engine.

Hearty slices

As usual I have no idea if I’m finished with this or not. I’ll set it aside for a bit and decide later. I sold a small still life last week (oranges, of course) so I thought I’d make a replacement. I tried to keep it loose with lots of broad strokes but I couldn’t resist fussing over the pulp.

Blue peaks painting

My mountain peak iPad doodles have evolved into a triptych oil painting using three masonite panels each measuring 8” x 10”. I like the result. The panels had a warm acrylic coat over the gesso so I simply wiped away the blues to expose the highlights.

Winter shades

Jury's still out on whether I love it or hate it but I’ve received lots of positive feedback.

It's another heavily textured acrylic. Plaster base, several gesso coats followed by at least a dozen layers of paint and glaze.

The trees were made with thinned paint and applied with an eyedropper... gravity was in the driver's seat.

I think I've got these out of my system for the time being. Back to the oils soon.

An abstract diversion

I needed a break from the oils this week so I did some acrylic paint pouring/dripping. For such a gentle process, the painting's got an aggressive vibe. Title and orientation yet to be determined... suggestions welcome. Adding to the shop later tonight... after nachos.

Patina Squares

I just realized I never did post the end result of this little experiment with plaster.

I just listed this set in the shop along with The Great Stone Face (Buster Keaton) and King of the Hill paintings.

BTW, am I the only one that thinks Patina Squares sounds like a medieval game show?

This Douglas Adams portrait was based on one of his publicity shots and painted, by request, for a friend.

He's best known for his Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series of books. I'm linking to the start of the most recent film adaptation which is not bad but the books are better. The books are always better.

Something I didn't know before was that Adams also contributed to some Monty Python sketches, including this one.

Rubik's Cube

If you look closely at my subject (not in the painting but in real life), you would be able to see where I attempted to peel the stickers off my cube when I was 10 or so, desperate to find success with this puzzle but no idea how to achieve it. I think my best result was three sides... and that was probably a fluke.

This is the final version

This is a painting of an alien cyclops head dissection. No... wait a second. I was thinking of a different project. This one's a sliced avocado.

I always get those mixed up.

I'm going to let this one dry and retackle the background. The shadows look a bit of a mess to me. Too many indecisive strokes? I dunno. Can't decide.
