Townie Crow

I've been picking at this one over the last few days. It's based on a photo I outright stole from Townie Bastard's blog. Not something I make a practice of but I didn't think he'd mind.

I wasn't terribly pleased with the outcome but I'm glad it's finished. I read a great quote somewhere the other day that every artist has a thousand bad paintings in them so the sooner you get them out of the way, the sooner you can get to the good stuff. I know I've got a ways to go but I'm hoping that's not a precise number....

Townie Crow
watercolour, ink
10.5" x 4.5"

Well, I think this is the first time someone has "stolen" one of my photos and transformed it into art. So I'm far more flattered than offended.

The only probblem is that, ummm, it's not a crow. It's raven. Same family of bird, I believe, except ravens are much larger, much smarter and kind of scary.

Your fun raven fact of the day - groups of ravens can be described either as an Unkindness of Ravens (and they can be real bastards, so it fits) or a Conspiracy of Ravens (which also fits because it always looks like they're up to something).

However, I don't know if ravens are native to St. John's, so Townie Crow kind of works, as long as you forget the origin of the photo...;)

Hehe... that's funny. Like i said I wasn't really happy with this anyway so I suppose it's apt that I blundered the title. I think he's too fuzzy to be a crow or a raven. More like a mutant parakeet.

Don't feel bad, they're a son of a bitch to photograph as well. I swear to God they absorb ambiant light around them. Nearly every close up photo I have of them is of a black bird-like thing, lacking in any kind of detail. It's maddening.

LOL... I'll have to post and hang that quote so I see it everyday. Love the raven/crow sketch.
