This painting is based on a photo I took from my home during last weekend's snowstorm in St. John’s. I was fixated on the image because, at the time, I was amazed at how much of my neighbourhood was being visually blotted out by the snowstorm.
I started this with the intention of doing a thin acrylic underpainting as a base for an oil painting but I really liked the colours I was mixing with the acrylics so I just kept going with those.

Blue peaks painting
My mountain peak iPad doodles have evolved into a triptych oil painting using three masonite panels each measuring 8” x 10”. I like the result. The panels had a warm acrylic coat over the gesso so I simply wiped away the blues to expose the highlights.

Winter shades
Jury's still out on whether I love it or hate it but I’ve received lots of positive feedback.
It's another heavily textured acrylic. Plaster base, several gesso coats followed by at least a dozen layers of paint and glaze.
The trees were made with thinned paint and applied with an eyedropper... gravity was in the driver's seat.
I think I've got these out of my system for the time being. Back to the oils soon.

Stripes
Illustration Friday's theme this week is "Stripes". So... Bill Murray. What else is there? (I threw some actual stripes in the background... just in casey).

Ill-fated cabbage
This is a doodle from an old sketchbook. I really should have redrawn it but I wasn't up for it tonight. I did, however, add some colour and shading in Photoshop. Based on a true story from the year of the Great Coleslaw Famine. Sad times indeed.
Posted for Illustration Friday's theme, Cultivate.

Spoons
This one's for Illustration Friday's theme-of-the-week: "stir". (The middle one is actually a spatula... he made a fuss so I had to let him be in it.) This one is available in the shop.

Detective

This is my contribution for Illustration Friday this week ("Detective" theme). It's my first linocut in a few months; I was happy that I was able to turn it around in a single sitting. Pleased with it overall but, as is the way with linos, there are always a few cuts I regret. I'm too tired to do any serious printing with it right now... I just knocked off a couple of quick prints to see what I had.
No great story behind the subject I'm afraid... just some anonymous Victorian guy I found on the interweb. Although he does have a bit of a Watson thing going on.

IF: Expired

Illustration Friday's theme word this week is "expired". And this is where my brain went. Sad but true.

Hatch

If I were an astronaut, this would be me.
Illustration Friday's theme-o-the-week: "Hatch".
(Patent idea: "Key in a Comet". Much like the spare key in a fake rock concept, but for astronauts. Genius.)
This one very nearly never came about. As I was inking the chin, the nib of my pen decided to belch out the entire load of ink. I either had to find a creative solution or start again. Being the lazy man that I am, he now has a beard.

The Optimist

This for Illustration Friday's "Entangled" challenge. It's an older cartoon cleaned-up and snazzified with Technicolor. Here's the original pen/ink drawing.

More chicken pixels

I've been fooling around with Painter IX today, trying to figure out if it's worth learning to use. I probably should have cracked open the paints and used one of the many blank canvases I've got lying around but I can't resist multiple undos. I enjoyed the process. Being able to backtrack is great but navigating the controls seems to really limit spontaneity. But I'm sure it'll get easier with practice.
